Widow's Bay

People on social media are hyping this up but it was super mid. There is an interesting concept that ultimately plays out in quite an uninteresting way. It’s shot quite nicely, as you’d expect from Hiro Murai, but heaven almighty the screenplay is so bad. There are a few interesting characters, and each episode’s plot SOUNDS like it could be phenomenal, on paper, but how they play out is always so annoying and unrewarding. It’s actually fascinating how each episode SHOULD be a banger but somehow falls flat. I feel like there are key moments that play out in exactly the wrong or blandest possible way, where the audience is repeatedly left thinking “it would have been much better if…” It COULD be a great lovecraftian horror, merging it with humour to cope with the dread. Instead it’s just a few averagely written short stories tied together. There are a couple of good episodes, that do stand on their own, and the vibe is OK, but is it worth watching? I’m not sure. I can imagine a world in which season 2, which they’ve set up, could correct these mistakes. They have great ingredients but what they’re cooking is, until now, so bland

I went into this blind and, a couple of episodes later, I was surprised to find out it’s quite hyped. Now it ended and I still don’t exactly see why. To me it feels like a project that had too many people involved in it, and as if it was written as they went along, with no vision whatsoever. It’s neither comedy nor horror enough, it lingers in some mid-space of both, playing it safe most of the time (with a few funny moments), and going for the most obvious solutions possible. I was hoping for at least ||some truly bizarre or shocking pay off in the end||, got ||melodrama|| instead, no itches scratched I’m afraid :-( Don’t think I’ll be watching Season 2

A nice little combination of horror and comedy with low commitment. Getting sadder by the episode! Travelling to a small island in two weeks, I will look for ancestral despair in the eyes of the indigenous islanders
