Watched ten minutes figuring I’d dislike it, disliked it, gone on. I like my hockey romances gay, funny and with a happy end that is achieved despite the cesspool of bigotry and tribaliam and MAGA degenerates that is hockey culture, thanks
Finished: Everything I wrote below still stands. Off Campus is consistently full of tropes and cliches, but it is altogether kinder than usual. Is it well-written? No. Is it real and raw? No. But it is charming and in some of the themes it deals with you could call it emotionally educational (although in a palatable, short-format-kind-of-way). Casting is fitting, characters are charming and it wasn't AT ALL the hate watch I was initially expecting. Nice! (I just really, really hope that no one is naive enough to watch this and then go into frat boys' houses expecting this kind of treatment because this is, after all, and unfortunately, a fantasy). ------- Started: I got curious about this after seeing one clip from it that made me cringe so hard I travelled back in time to 2012, so just had to give it a try However, I’m on episode 2 and was shocked to realise that this is actually, unironically gotta-impress-the-guy-who-doesn’t-notice-me-by-making-him-jealous & she’s-not-like-other-girls-she’s-different & oh-she-was-hot-the-entire-time-just-needed-a-makeover & I-don’t-do-girlfriends & there-is-only-one-bed-and-the-two-of-us-but-we’re-enemies, omg-everyone-wants-to-date-jocks-they’re-so-hot and the worst culprit of them all BITING AND LICKING LIPS NON-STOP. WHO.DID.EVER.TEACH.ACTORS.THAT.THIS.IS.HOT. PLEASE. STOP. Also, fine, I can ignore the reality and say I appreciate this fantasy-like attempt of portraying hockey jocks as kind and respectful but nothing and I mean NOTHING will ever make me not gag (nauseously) at scenes of buff shirtless dudes at frat houses doing always the same four things, namely, working out, having sex, drinking, playing video games, which actually doesn’t sound like that bad of a day now that I write it down but you know what I mean. Putting aside terrible cliches and tropes that should be shipped to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch with the rest of our Earthly trash, I do enjoy not knowing any of the cast, most of them are quite charming and warm so far, and I feel like all the cringe I’ve experienced in these two episodes kind of positively affected me? It’s so badly written but in such an honest, oblivious way it’s heartwarming. I think I finally understand the appeal and the addictive formula of all those copy-pasted romances Might continue let’s seeee
Ok bear with me I had no idea what this was going into it. It’s a very cringy and horny college situationship show. It’s so fucking dumb, falls into so many tropes, has split screen shots out the wazzoo, some characters are naked half the time they’re on screen, BUT… It’s really fucking fun, well paced, somehow the script is surprisingly tight, with fun cliffhangers and spicy themes (of course, it helps to be mentioned on social media to be relevant) and a couple of them are really quite well portrayed. I’m unfamiliar with this genre of show, I know there’s the Euphorias and the Heated Rivalries but I haven’t seen any of them, so maybe there are many like it and it’s nothing special, but to me it was fresh. It’s very kitschy, everyone always knows exactly what to say, everyone looks like a model, but once you accept it’s all intentional for certain audiences, the cringe eventually normalises and you can enjoy it for what it is. But the characters are just so fucking comfy and nice. Everyone, even the frat bros are supportive, kind, empathetic. They’re all superhuman, but it’s a fantasy, so it’s fun to watch in that way. Do I think society needs more shows like this? I don’t know, it’s a little dumb, it can manifest unrealistic expectations of…just about everything. On the other hand it can maybe also encourage you to try and be better. I’d enjoy this cautiously, in moderation. If you can moderate, then it’s great. We were hooked and I’ll definitely be watching season 2.
