Lyra is an orphan who lives in a parallel universe in which science, theology and magic are entwined. Her search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children and turns into a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust. She is later joined on her journey by Will, a boy who possesses a knife that can cut windows between worlds. As she learns the truth about her parents and her prophesied destiny, the two young people are caught up in a war against celestial powers that ranges across many worlds.

Rewatched this absolute MASTERPIECE of a show. I mean it has everything: fantasy, amazing acting, action, story across multiple worlds, top notch effects and CGI, bashing the catholic church - what more could you ask for? The cast is incredible. The daemons are SO well done and the interactions between them and the people feel very real, exactly how it should be considering they are an extension/manifestation of their soul. Mrs Coulter.. Such a profound, complex, layered character whose journey is, in my eyes, even bigger than Lyra’s. Lyra being the main heroine really doesn’t take away from anyone else’s story in this show. I was interested and excited to see each group, each character and how they fit into the puzzle. I think you often get bored or end up uninterested in side storylines and characters (even if they have a crucial part in the story), but I got none of that here. I think it’s mainly because of the actors and how ‘serious’ everything feels. Other than that, anything critisizing the church and religion - sign me up. Here, that very obvious critique, keeps you grounded the whole time. It’s that ‘real’ layer in the story and within the fantasy of it all, that you can recognise. Philip Pullman did not hold back and neither did the creators of the show. I really loved the portrayal of the whole human-daemon relationship, even though I’m sure there are intricacies that got lost in the adaption. I often think about what my daemon would be. I’d love to think it’s something like a doe or a red panda, but I feel like I’d end up with a blob fish or a naked mole rat. Anyway, this is a must watch for anyone into fantasy! I will definitely re-watch again in the future.
