The version that I have watched was entirely animated and was in black and white. While I did have the option to choose colour, I chose black and white because it’s more representative of the era and I feel that black and white adds a certain qualities to proceedings. Firstly, let me say that this is one of the few stories where I feel the animation is an active improvement on seeing the show as broadcast. The Macra look far more threatening in the two dimensional world compared to the real world counterpart and the animators are able to fit multiple Macra into the story, while the original crew had to be creative with just the one prop. The settings look rather excellent too. The only real problem with this animation is that it’s not as satisfying watching cartoon avatars of Troughton and team (even if their vocal performances are pretty strong).
