X is a 2022 American slasher film written, directed, produced, and edited by Ti West. Set in 1979, it follows a cast and crew who travel to rural Texas to shoot an adult film on the property of an elderly couple, only to find themselves trapped in a terrifying nightmare. Mia Goth delivers a standout performance in her dual roles as Maxine, an ambitious young woman, and Pearl, the elderly owner of the property. Her charisma and screen presence carry the film, making both characters memorable in very different ways. Ti West's direction is excellent, capturing the atmosphere and aesthetic of 1970s horror while giving the film its own identity. The pacing is strong, allowing tension to build naturally before the violence erupts. X feels like a modern slasher that successfully channels the spirit of classic horror slasher films. 7.5/10
