This grim and heartbreaking backstory serves as a contrast to the series’ eerie yet still somehow cozy atmosphere. It’s a perfect continuation of the series, but I wonder whether it works as a standalone movie. I just finished S1 and S2 again so I can’t tell. It’s not exploitative in any way. If anything, it’s possibly one of those movies that can deepen empathy. But still, it disturbed me and saddened me too much to say I enjoyed it and I’m not sure I’ll be able to rewatch it. Sheryl Lee is fantastic, David Lynch is fantastic. ❤️ for Laura Palmer and her real-life counterparts.

We have the idea of two people being one and the same, as we saw in Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive. We have the spiritualism of Eraserhead. Like Blue Velvet, we have the dark heart that lies beneath American society. For full transparency, I saw Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me many years ago, before I ever saw the TV series. I found it to be a profoundly powerful experience, considering the subject matter is the abuse Laura Palmer faced. In some ways, watching the TV series has dampened some aspects of the film and in others as greatly enhanced it.
