A deranged media mogul is staging international incidents to pit the world's superpowers against each other. Now James Bond must take on this evil mastermind in an adrenaline-charged battle to end his reign of terror and prevent global pandemonium.
Tomorrow Never Dies is the most subtly absurd Bond film. 'Subtly absurd? What the hell does that mean?' allow me to explain. In a series that has included space battles, moon buggy chases and underwater bases, Tomorrow Never Dies doesn't really factor into the silliness scale, yet it does have a mobile phone controlled car and Rupert Murdoch as the villain. This is not to say I don't enjoy the film, in fact it's silliness is one of the most redeeming features. My brother and I laughed a lot during the sequence where Bond turns up in disguise as a banker called... James Bond to Elliot Carver's launch and makes not terribly subtle threats before hitting on his wife then believing some henchmen when they tell him he has a call... WHO'S CALLING YOU JAMES? WHY WERE YOU NOT EXPECTING A FIGHT? This is before Dr Kaufman turns up! He's a henchmen the writers forgot to give any backstory to, so he turns up and just reads his Bond Wiki entry down the camera. A short list of observations: Really boring title sequence. Perhaps one of the worst in the franchise. Its seems like some kid made it on his amiga 500 in his parents basement. Stealth ship?!? That's really stupid. The officers on the bridge should have seen the ship coming miles away. Drill torpedo is really stupid, and very cartoony- Why is Pierce brosnan always biting the women in their shoulders? Michelle Yeoh is an awesome bond girl, and a capable one at that. So now its BMW and Omega, no longer Austin Martins and Rolex. Even in the intelligences branches its a time of austerity.
