Kate sees opportunity when Millie Theale arrives on the London social scene, a lonely and wealthy heiress who “would be the Queen of America if they had one”. As their scheme unfolds, the time comes when Kate and Merton may have bit off more than they can chew, with both their love and cruelty put to the ultimate tests.
