O Agente Secreto (The Secret Agent) is a 2025 political thriller written and directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho. Set against the oppressive backdrop of Brazil’s military dictatorship, the film follows Armando (Wagner Moura), a former professor forced into survival mode as paranoia, surveillance, and political persecution tighten their grip around him. What begins as an attempt to flee gradually becomes a quiet act of resistance against an unforgiving authoritarian system. The cast delivers strong performances. Wagner Moura is outstanding as Armando. A special mention goes to the late Udo Kier, whose brief yet haunting appearance feels like a poignant farewell, an understated final note in a long career. The screenplay feels grounded and politically sharp, immersing the viewer in a climate of surveillance and distrust. At times, however, the pacing drags, and the narrative could benefit from tighter editing to maintain tension. Still, the atmosphere is compelling, and touches like the subtle Jaws references and the striking “leg scene” add layers of metaphor. A thoughtful, unsettling political thriller that values mood and reflection over spectacle. 7.5/10
