The Others is the first horror movie I’ve ever seen, when I was around the age of the little girl in the movie. It contributed to my love for all things gothic-adjacent, macabre and Nicole Kidman, and probably contributed to my being creepy little child for a period of time. Two rewatches later, knowing the twist (really, one of the most iconic twists ever) and actually understanding what’s going on beyond the spooky, you discover another layer of horror, a sadder one, too, with the context of war, and single motherhood in complete isolation. The tension and the haunting are achieved through such creative, seemingly simple methods, it’s really beautiful.
