The Drama

It looks great, it sounds great. I get that it’s generic but I’m the target audience, so I let it have this one. The actors are great, cast with such precision im pretty sure the film was written once they agreed to play in it. It’s just—well. It bites off this intimidating chunk of sociopolitical and spiritual ache and it, predictably, chokes on it. I sort of get what they hoped they would do, have this experiential, sideways approach at the issue, and if they managed, it would be a masterpiece, movie of the decade. But they didn’t, unfortunately. They had a couple of fun takes - casting Zendaya as the problematic one instead of the more obvious Pattinson is a great choice. Mostly, for me, I liked the cast two people who appear to be, by all accounts, genuine weirdos in a very modern way. They aren’t Helen Bonham Carter weird or Tim Burton weird Nicholas Cage weird, or even Tom Waits weird, although Pattinson comes close at times. They are sort of too beautiful and in vogue to be awkward, but you can see thats what’s happening. I’ve never seen an interview with Zendaya where she wasn’t awkward to the point of diagnosis, and Pattinson, bless him, just turns off his brain and babbles nonsense like a maniac hoping to confuse the public into leaving him alone. Theyre weirdos, and that’s great casting. But idk, idk where the third act went, did it fall between the sofa cushions? Wheres your point, im sorry, was this all a big, beautiful ad? Im all for it, if so, I loved the Gucci movie mess. But if not, then something, somewhere, went awry. 2,5 in truth but the fashion bumps it up to 3,5.

I had a good time with it, but it wasn’t very memorable. I thought there were really interesting threads being spun; how much of our society is near a breaking point but we don’t know it? It was a very A24 movie, which used to be a phenomenal thing to say, but it has become a little systematized. I thought Pattinson, as always, was great. The fucker a good actor isn’t he?

Enjoyed the intrigue, enjoyed the premise, but overall felt quite superficial, on top of the generic A24 visuals. The Drama promises the drama but, after a really good buildup, the culmination was way too rushed for me, I didn’t have the time to feel proper discomfort. It felt like a decent long short movie. To me it was mostly entertaining, but I can’t say there’s anything excellent or even reaaally good about it.

With this, sick of myself and dream scenario I had the same feeling. That there is a really good premises but it did not totally satisfy me. But I am a big fan of more unusual ideas, so keep going kristoffer!!

I have many thoughts about this film but most of them are unfortunately locked behind spoilers. Overall it was fantastic, great script great performances and a strong identity behind the camera as well. Everyone does a great job but Alana Haim as Rachel kinda steals the show, what an actress I need to see her in more movies. The film is hilarious, although I did notice that I was pretty much the only person laughing in my theater so maybe that style of humour fits me better than most people. I did find the film to be a bit uneven in that regard, it's very front loaded with comedy and there is a point where I think it could've used some more restraint with the jokes. Another issue I have with the film is that it does get a bit too convenient in the third act to "force" more drama and the climax does come off a bit too much like an Arrested Development episode where all these unfortunate coincidences conveniently culminated in a hilarious finale. But other than that I really don't have any complaints. It's a fantastic movie with a fresh and original idea at the center of it, it's hilarious to boot and features phenomenal performances. I'm excited to see what others on here think 👀

Quirky, edgy, deep, great fashion, music and acting! Oh and one of the very few occasions you get to hear Pattinson's english accent so props to that as well
