I was very pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this sequel, as unnecessary as it was. It never really achieved the giddiness of the first movie, but it was a lot of fun in its own right, and it was a lovely to revisit the characters.
Sequal executed very well, a fresh and crisp take
It’s strange, not a 2,5 but simultaneously one and five. The film itself is—i mean i was always going to like it. The old crew is back together, Streep is a marvel, Tucci is a balm, Hathaway is—beautiful. On the other hand, did they deliberately put it out this year? Look, you either care about fashion or you don’t. Fact is, fashion is a hard sell in today’s politics and socioeconomic climate. It’s perfectly fine if you don’t. I do. I like the frivolity, I like the extravagance. Art is often so—classy and restrained, tasteful. Haute couture is loud and unashamed and I love all of it, the beautiful and bizarre and straight up silly. So I am not thrilled about this film, not thrilled it seems to take the cowardly route. Not in the age where Bezos bought the Met gala, where Anna Wintour is chauffeuring Lauren Sanchez to all the fashion parties like a slain foe, like some old monster made to drag around the chariot of the new, worse monster come to torment us. I They tried to make it topical, presumably, only we already live in the darkest timeline. It’s done, it’s gone. Maybe something new will spawn from its remains, something more resilient, more steadfast in the fact of capitalist ghouls, but for now it’s gone. Sanchez unique blend of shamelessness, aggression and cold, reptilian intelligence won. And I don’t want to watch wishful what if’s, even with Streep and Tucci and Hathaway.
Uff. Those half assed political „statements“ ruined the experience for me. To make a movie in 2026 that nods at „woke“ HR culture as if the woke pendulum did not swing back already 🙄
