Scream

Scream (2022), also known as Scream 5, is an American slasher film directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. It is the first installment in the franchise not directed by Wes Craven, who passed away in 2015 and to whom the film is dedicated. The story takes place twenty-five years after the original Woodsboro murders, when a new Ghostface emerges and begins targeting a group of teenagers, each of whom shares a connection to the events of the past. Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell reprise their iconic roles, while Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Mikey Madison, and the rest of the younger cast deliver strong performances. The film adopts a slightly more serious tone than some of its predecessors while still maintaining the self-aware humor and meta-commentary that define the franchise. Although it is not a Wes Craven film, Scream pays tribute to both Craven and the horror genre as a whole, with several character names serving as references to influential horror filmmakers. The movie successfully introduces a new generation of characters while respecting the legacy of the original series. A solid modern slasher and a worthy continuation of the Scream franchise. 7/10
