Polish socialist and Marxist Rosa Luxemburg works tirelessly in the service of revolution in early 20th century Poland and Germany. While Luxemburg campaigns for her beliefs, she is repeatedly imprisoned as she forms the Spartacist League offering a new vision for Germany.
Do recommend! With the stuff I have been reading lately it felt a bit like the avengers, getting to see all the Kautskys and Bebels and Zetkins. It might have a bit of a conventional biopic/historic movie look without too much cinematic risks, but it truly tries to depict Rosa Luxemburg as close to reality as possible which includes not taking away from her revolutionary and also radical mind. I think today, this movie would be made into some girl boss slop and completely robbed of its core. Rosa Luxemburg today is often seen as this „humanist marxist“ that you can easily refer to without having to ask too uncomfortable questions in the way you would have in relation to Lenin for example, which even becomes infantilizing at times. So, in the end, I’m really happy this German movie exists, while also grieving a little that nobody big would make a film like this today.
