After hitting rock bottom in Los Angeles, former porn star Mikey Saber returns to his hometown in Texas to stay with his estranged wife and mother-in-law. Just as tensions begin to ease, he becomes infatuated with a young doughnut shop worker named Strawberry.
This was a great watch. It felt like I was sitting in the car, or sitting in a chair in the corner of the house watching these scenes unfold. It’s so good. You did it again Sean!
Another exceptional look at character and location by Sean Baker. An uncomfortable experience, but certainly exceptional. Red Rocket is another 'slice of life' style film from Sean Baker, where every single aspect of the film is injected with character. This particular film is about a pornographic actor called Mikey (played by Simon Rix) looking to resurrect his life after returning home to a small town in Texas. As such, this film led me to once again reflect on the class system and how it traps people into situations but it is also layered with other issues to reflect on. Once again he have some gorgeous cinematography. There's so many perfectly weighted shots and truly spectacular lighting. There's a lot of stillness when things are progressing well for Mikey and there's more movement when they aren't progressing well. Moreover the mise-en-scene is impectable.
