Pearl is a 2022 American slasher film directed, produced, and edited by Ti West, who co-wrote the screenplay with Mia Goth. Serving as the second installment in the X film series and a prequel to X (2022), the film explores the origins of its iconic villain. Set in rural Texas in 1918, it follows Pearl, a young woman whose obsessive dream of becoming a movie star clashes with the harsh realities of her family life, gradually pushing her toward madness. Mia Goth delivers an absolutely phenomenal performance as Pearl, elevating the film to another level. Her portrayal is unsettling and emotionally layered, making Pearl one of the most memorable characters. The supporting cast also does a solid job. The pacing is excellent, allowing the tension to build steadily while immersing in Pearl's mental state. Ti West crafts a beautifully shot film filled with visuals that contrast with the darkness; almost the whole film was shot during the day. The atmosphere is constantly balancing dreamlike beauty with madness. Combined with sharp editing and direction, the result is a horror film that feels both classic and unique. In my opinion, the strongest film in the X trilogy. 8.5/10
