Although Mary has little income, she still finds ways to spend her nights at clubs. After being arrested for throwing an illegal rave, she asks her aunt Judy for bail money. Judy then finds Mary a job at her library so that Mary can repay her. Initially, Mary finds the job as a clerk boring and stifling, and prefers to get to know a street food vendor whom she likes. However, Mary must refocus her life once she loses her job and apartment.

Effortlessly cool, authentic, believable, charming. I wish every film had this vibe. There’s a lot of themes and so many types of cultures and subcultures. You get such an intense glimpse of a few young lives in 90s New York and it’s wonderful. Acting is all over the place and I love it, it’s so awkward at times it doesn’t even feel scripted.
You're in your 20s or 30s, feeling lost and useless? You just haven't yet found a way to use your transferrable skills. What if organising raves and racks of stolen designer clothes is not much different than using Dewey Decimal Classification as a library clerk? Please, read this exchange. Mary: Do you know the story of Sisyphus? Leo: Who? Mary: Sisyphus. It's a myth about this guy who had to roll or push this incredibly huge rock up this steep mountain. Every time he would get to the top of this mountain the rock would roll down again. he would watch this and walk back down the mountain and do it all over again. Forever. Leo: Drag. Mary: It's a metaphor for life, Leo. It's famous. Leo: Is this some kind of drug rehab? Mary: [looks through book] It's not rehab. [reads] Mary: One must imagine Sisyphus happy. Leo: Bullshit. He's miserable. Mary: He doesn't have to be. He accepts his fate. Leo: You're telling me if your name is Syphilis, and you spend your life lugging a fucking rock up a hill you wouldn't be miserable? Mary: I think I'm an existentialist. I do. How good is this? Fantastisch. Also, this. Derrick: Karl and I connected that night. From the essence, from the ancient center of our beings. Mary: The two of you were on Ecstasy. It dries out your spinal fluid. Daisy von Scherler Mayer's debut also happens to be one of those movies set in New York that actually feels real unlike most movies set in New York. Parker Posey is truly mesmerizing, and paired with perfect outfits for every occassion. I know this word is thrown around too much, but seriously, fashion in this movie is iconic, and so is she. And just some months ago, hemlocked.substack.com wrote an article breaking down 21 of her outfits, and breaking my heart with listing their prices (of course the thing I want most is a 4000 dollar Vivienne Westwood corset). However, some items are non-designer and non-identified, which means that there are boomers somewhere out there keeping them in their closets and storage boxes. It's time to become a burglar. Or a librarian. The movie makes both quite appealing.
