Oldboy is a 2003 South Korean action thriller film directed and co-written by Park Chan-wook. Loosely based on the Japanese manga Old Boy by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi, the film follows Oh Dae-su, a man who is mysteriously imprisoned for 15 years without knowing who captured him or why. Upon his sudden release, he sets out to uncover the truth behind his captivity and seek revenge. The script is superb, gradually revealing the mystery alongside the main character as he tries to understand what happened to him and why. The film maintains a tense and unpredictable atmosphere throughout. Choi Min-sik delivers an outstanding performance as Oh Dae-su, supported by a strong cast that brings depth to the story. Oldboy stands out in its unique style and storytelling. It feels very different from most American or European thrillers, combining intense drama, shocking twists, and striking visual direction. A cult classic that everyone should watch. 8.5/10
Disturbing, disgusting, painful to watch In all that evil and violence, I couldn't find the time to feel sad for the characters Not sure I would watch it again... maybe in 15 years
