During the COVID19 pandemic, a call went out to fans of the BBC TV science fiction series DOCTOR WHO to film personal videos of how they coped with being confined in their homes for months on end. Shot on mobile phones, laptops, tablets and cameras …anything they could lay their hands on … the following film is the result. It's an inspiring tale of the indomitable human spirit - all wrapped up in some utterly unique stories and videos!
Oddly enough, the perfect way to round the classic era off. The Doctor faces off against one of his oldest foes, the Doctor and Ace walk off into the sunset and most importantly Survival ends a sort of trilogy of Ace stories, in which we see her face her past, present and future fears. I’m not sure that I can pinpoint a companion in the show’s history (at least until New Who) where a character has had such clear development. There are strong ties to modern ideals in the story, ranging from sexual liberation, to the abandonment of working class kids by capitalism and how Thatcherite economics has eroded society to the point where individuals are in a fight for survival. It’s really quite humbling to watch this story when thinking about how the show started, seeing how much has changed in the show and in society, Doctor Who proves itself to be a consistently daring show.
