After I got over the inherent feeling of capitalist dystopia that is kpop I really had a fun time with this. Kinda feels like it came out of nowhere. Animation is phenomenal, songs are pretty fun, nothing overstays its welcome. The characters and their expressions and interactions are really fun. It’s a little weak on storyline and song catchiness but it does enough. Visually it’s so good that you can forgive it. Golden and Soda Pop are the standout, the rest is a little generic. For a film about kpop I expected chronic bacterial infection level virality. I assume they’ll bleed this dry for years to come, let’s see
I enjoyed the animation style, outfits, suuuper charming characters and a couple of songs, story overall so-so, but the absolute best part was the tiger and the bird duo, and a line that goes: “Every snowflake is special… But one snowflake is probably the best.”
I think seeing this movie knowing how hyped up it was lead me to have higher expectations. Fundamentally, I thought K-pop Demon Hunters had an interesting and very original premise, its animation was beautiful, and Golden stands out as a memorable and catchy song that I have come to enjoy compared to its other more bland numbers. Overall, I did find the story and pacing to be extremely rushed, to the point where it left little emotional impact on me and many scenes felt so abrupt. I didn’t find the characters to be fleshed out either, and the humour was a little hammy at times.
