This movie was a real treat. With its breezy runtime of just under an hour and a half, Girlfriends explores the deep friendship between two women, in addition to everything else that complicates their lives. Susan Weinblatt is a young photographer in 1970s New York who is left to remould her life when her best friend Anne gets married and moves out. I loved how organic this movie felt, it often felt like I was watching a documentary, and it had a good mix of genuinely moving moments of vulnerability between the two lead characters and some cheeky humour. It’s really obvious how this movie was the blueprint for other media such as Frances Ha and Girls.
