Mike Windgren works on a boat in Acapulco, but when the bratty daughter of its owner gets him fired, Mike finds new work as a lifeguard and singer at a local hotel. Tensions increase when Mike runs afoul of the rival lifeguard—also the champion diver of Mexico.
"In" is likely the most accurate word in the title. For those that need me to telegraph the opening line, Fun in Acapulco is neither fun nor is it filmed in Acapulco... Ok that's a slight exaggeration. There is some Acapulco in the film, but it's all body double shots of Elvis as the real Elvis Presley was banned from going to Mexico. The story behind the ban is actually more interesting than this movie. The basic gist of it is a Mexican politician invited Elvis to perform for his daughter's birthday, Elvis rejected and the politician ran a disinformation campaign so effective Elvis screenings in Mexico caused riots. By contrast Fun in Acapulco consists of Elvis being a singer in the middle of a love triangle... Again. At least he's a lifeguard rather than a racer I guess. So yes, standard Elvis affair once again. If Fun in Acapulco has anything going for it compared to the usual, it's that the script bothered to include a character arc.
