Johnny is a riverboat entertainer with a big gambling problem. After a psychic tells Johnny how he can change his luck, the appearance of a new 'lady luck' soon causes a catfight with Johnny's girlfriend, Frankie.
Brevity is the soul of whit, yet at 87 minutes this is whitless and souless Frankie and Johnny is Elvis' most Shakespearean film. We have foreboding predictions about the future, we have a play within a play and we have mistaken identity be a core aspect of the 'comedy'. Except unlike Shakespeare, Frankie and Johnny signifies nothing... It doesn't even have the sound or fury either. The plot is pretty straightforward. Elvis plays Johnny. Johnny and girlfriend Frankie are performers on a riverboat, which also has a casino. Johnny is in debt due to gambling. He has his fortune told by gypsies who spin him a tale about a red headed woman bringing him luck. Cue mild love triangle/comedy misunderstanding. Elvis and his girlfriend put a play on where she shoots him out of jealousy for flirting with the redhead.
