Amidst the French revolution, Citizen Robespierre is beheading the aristocracy! When word gets to England, noblemen Sir Rodney Ffing and Lord Darcy Pue take it upon themselves to aid their French counterparts. Sir Rodney is a master of disguise, and becomes 'The Black Fingernail' scourge of Camembert and Bidet, leaders of the French secret police.
The Reign of Terr-eh A bit of an underwhelming entry into the Carry On oeuvre. It feels lately like the Carry On films find a setting rather than find a story and just hope that comedy materialises. In this case, the setting is The French Revolution. In terms of the plot, it's basically the Scarlet Pimpernel story. Sid James is an aristocrat who is unnerved by the French Revolution and wants to rescue the bourgeoisie. I'm already rooting against Sid James as a consequence. He doesn't help matters by pursuing a woman who appears to be far too young for him. But beyond that broad outline it's mostly just a repeated series of events but with different window dressing. Sid James and Kenneth Williams set traps for eachother. As a consequence it's a bit of a fatiguing experience. The whole film just feels like there was a runtime to aim towards and if the film was falling short, some padding was added. I've mentioned the repeated set ups, but the ending very much reflects this too.
