The Doctor and Mel visit Paradise Towers, a residential complex that promises a peaceful life to its residents. However, the establishment is far from what its name suggests: A conflict persists among the Kangs, humanesque multicolour beings who gather in opposing gangs based on which colour of the rainbow they bear; killer cleaning robots prowl the halls, and a secret in the complex's basement poses the greatest threat of all.
Camper than Dale Winton on a caravanning holiday and I mean that in a positive way. Paradise Towers is perhaps the only story in series 24 that’s somewhat tolerable. The plot itself is essentially a rip off of J.G. Ballard’s High Rise except far more explicit in its social commentary and far sillier. To me, I feel the campiness of this story works well enough that it is entertaining. The Kangs are like a seven year old’s depiction of a teenage gang, Pex is such a two-dimensional cliché and Richard Briers attacks the scenery cutlery in hand, yet it’s all so charmingly over the top. I do appreciate though that this can be rather grating for people and there was a completely missed chance to tell a more horrific and deeper story. The weaknesses in this story are but a continuation of the previous story in that the music is just horrifically poor, Mel spends the entire time screaming again and visually everything is just so garish.
