Captain S. Melly takes over as the new Commanding Officer at an experimental mixed sex air defence base. It's 1940 and England is under heavy bombardment, but the crew seem more interested in each other than the enemy planes above. Captain Melly plans to put a stop to all this, and becomes the target of a campaign to abandon his separatist ideals...
Why wasn't this called 'Keep Calm and Carry On'? Carry On England, much like Carry On Behind, is a half baked mimic of past glories. It shouldn't shock you, upon the revelation that this is set during the Second World War, that Carry On Sergeant is the film that's being copied. There are differences of course, some more crucial than others, the most primary of all being that Carry On Sergeant was funny in places. The basic structure is the same. A group of young tearaways in the army are embarrassing their superior officer prior to an investigation. In Carry On Sergeant, the troops were all male layabouts on National Service. In Carry On England, it's a mixed gender platoon during the Second World War who want to rut like stags on a lads holiday in Benidorm. There's a temptation to say it's a testament to the Carry On franchise's creativity that they managed to make a sex comedy in this setting, but the reality is it's actually a damning reflection on their lack of creativity.
