Captain Crowther's lot is not a happy one! Five of his crew have to be replaced and at such short notice before the voyage begins there isn't much to choose from. Not only does he get the five most incompetent shipmates ever to sail the seven seas, but the passengers turn out to be a rather strange bunch too. The SS Happy Wanderer will never be the same.
A film that's all at sea After Carry On Regardless gave the format some opportunity to experiment, we've slipped back into bad habits. Carry On Cruising is among the least inspiring of the franchise as it approaches everything in a manner so half hearted you'd be forgiven for thinking it was a Rob Schneider film. Similar to the first four films, we have a structure where the Cruise industry is the target. Sid James plays the captain of the ship and it's his ambition to be promoted, however his regular crew are all absent and he's been given a gaggle of layabouts and nincompoops instead. This the stage is set of shenanigans. The problem is there's just no momentum, tension and the actual comedic material itself is severely lacking. In terms of the lack of tension, we're given very little time with the Captain before the crew joins so we don't have a sense of how much the promotion means to him, not is it something in focus.
