Barbarian is a 2022 American horror film written and directed by Zach Cregger in his directorial debut. The story follows Tess Marshall, who arrives at an Airbnb accommodation that has been double-booked and is already occupied by a stranger named Keith. An unsettling horror film that constantly shifts between fear, tension, and disgust. The central concept is original and refreshing, and the way the narrative is structured is well done. One particular flashback sequence is exceptionally well shot, creating a genuinely creepy atmosphere and standing out as one of the film's highlights. Cregger does a good job of subverting expectations and maintaining suspense, making the film unpredictable. The biggest weakness lies in some of the characters' decisions. While the film attempts to portray them as realistic people, several of their choices feel implausible. 7/10
In hindsight, the reason to watch this is because Bill Skarsgård gives you something pretty to look at for a while. Otherwise, yeah. Nah.
Some cool concepts executed somewhat flimsily. Justin Long is pretty funny and there's some really cool directorial choices, especially for a debut. However there's too many silly horror tropes, and while I can excuse a couple, it made me roll my eyes a bit too often.
That was really good.
