The true story of how Dave Fishwick, a working class man and self-made millionaire, fought to set up a community bank so that he could help the local businesses of Burnley not only survive, but thrive. In his bid to help his beloved community, he has to take on the elitist financial institutions of London and fight to receive the first, new banking license to be issued in over 100 years.
The Bank of Dave is based on a true story and by true, I mean 'false'. It's all lies, but it's entertaining lies and in the end isn't that the real truth? The answer is no. Simpsons quotes aside, this story is remarkable in its representation of events. I don't remember any depicted events happening in the original Channel 4 Documentary series. I remember the oddly charming Dave Fishwick pottering about Burnley giving low interest loans to the community to expand their businesses. It was actually a pretty interesting little story from multiple angles, firstly the sort of class consciousness of the relatively little man (relatively because he still owns a pretty sizeable business) against the banking industry. Secondly, the local pride aspect as Dave is clearly a man who wants the best for Burnley.
