Well, I've just read my first ever monster fucker book, and boy do I have some thoughts. Mostly just: "How did I get here?" and "What am I doing with my life?" Some people are out there curing cancer or saving puppies, I'm over here reading about a woman having sex with a merman....people come in multitudes. So, to keep this simple, a woman falls in love with a fish. Albeit a sexy, muscled fish with two penises. She doesn't find out about him having two penises until the end tho - that's how you know it's true love. The premise of the series is simple: people have destroyed the planet and now have to live in underwater cities on the bottom of the ocean. At least this part is realistic by the way things have been going so far. And if the mermen part were also true, maybe we would have something to look forward to when we annihilate our ecosystem with AI and trash. Okay, so, people live at the bottom of the ocean. The merpeople (I just made that up; the author calls them Undines) don't like it one bit. Cue a relatively well-written enemies-to-lovers story with very simple but passable world-building that you can get through in a day or two. Are you wiser for having read this? No. But you forever live with the fact you sat through 200 pages worth of human-fish romance, And that, I believe, says a lot about your character already. The "science" in this is laughable. What's also laughable is looking for coherent scientific explanations for things in a book where the main love interest is part of the same biological group as a sardine. Anyway, once you come to terms with the fact you have hit rock bottom and decide your dignity means nothing, you can admit to yourself that it's not the worst smut book you've ever read, and was actually kind of ok. And then you download the next two books of the series...like I said, multitudes.
