There's an interesting story at the heart of this. An Icarus type story where two men bite off more than they can chew. The lack of detail makes it slightly more engaging as it allows you to read between the lines. However I don't think the framing device works, it adds an unnecessary layer and removes the tension as you're hearing a story second hand.
